Join Professor Joe Grimm from MSU as he “teaches” us a class on the Freedom of Information Act—otherwise known as FOIA. He will talk about what the act is for, how it works, barriers/roadblocks to using it and alternative strategies for getting information. He will also discuss the  recent developments with Michigan's FOIA and the role Records Manager’s might play in the process and what to do when someone sends a FOIA request.

About Our Speaker

Joe GrimmJoe Grimm is a professor in the School of Journalism at Michigan State University and worked as a Detroit-area journalist for more than 30 years. He was a member of the steering committee for a "FOIA Fest" organized in 2020 by the Detroit chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. In late 2020, he and his students were part of a team to use the Freedom of Information Act to gather campaign finance records from all 83 Michigan counties.
